NONAME / AN UNFAMILIAR BRAND

Before you
open the can.

Three questions that help you avoid working blind.

  1. 01

    Who makes it?

Find the company and batch identification. A name or flag on a can is not enough.

  2. 02

    Where are the documents?

For chemical materials, find the TDS and SDS. For tools, check the manual and operating specifications.

  3. 03

    Does the system work together?

Check material, abrasive and accessory compatibility. For coatings, follow the technical sheet and verify the system on a test panel.

THE COST OF REWORK

When a finish
goes wrong.

Cratering, orange peel, peeling. It is better to recognise the causes in a photograph than after your own paint job.

Peeling / adhesion loss

A coating separates from its substrate or another layer. Possible causes include contamination, insufficient preparation, incompatible materials and incorrect flash times.

CHECK

Clean and prepare the substrate, verify system compatibility and follow the technical data sheet.

Orange peel

Uneven texture forms when droplets fail to level. Gun setup, viscosity, a reducer or hardener that is too fast, and booth temperature can contribute.

CHECK

Adjust the spray gun, select components for the application conditions, and follow mixing ratios and flash times.

Solvent-popping photograph from the PPG guide.

Solvent popping

Trapped solvent creates open blisters as the film cures. Excessive film build, components that are too fast, and overheating are possible factors.

CHECK

Follow the specified film build and curing schedule; choose reducer and hardener for booth conditions.

Fisheyes / cratering

Round depressions form in the wet coating. Silicone and contamination on the surface, wiping cloths or compressed-air lines are common causes.

CHECK

Use suitable surface cleaners and clean cloths, and maintain compressed-air filters.

These are examples of common defects, not evidence about a particular brand. Diagnosis depends on system compatibility, preparation, application and curing. A photograph does not identify the coating brand; these defects can occur with different brands.
